My Classroom At NFC Academy

Science

Success in science classes will depend on how you define success and what your goals are for your future. Do you want to continue in science or a STEM field? Do you want long-term understanding of the world around you? Do you want to earn a good grade? Do you want to simply survive science? In any case, science requires careful reading and a deep dive into the vocabulary of the course. Science uses terminology that is not used on a day-to-day basis, and it also uses familiar words in a more precise and detailed way that can be unfamiliar. Each science course utilizes on-line labs. These labs are particularly important to your developing understanding of research and analysis of scientific concepts. Thoroughly read the background material, the instructions, and procedures, as well as the analysis questions for each lab. Choose to enjoy the opportunity to gain experience about the world that God created and placed you in!

My Family

My husband, Mike, and I were married in 2004. We initially lived in Georgia and moved to Tallahassee, following his career, in 2006. We have six children. Our oldest are fraternal twins and we have three girls and three boys. I enjoy walking trails, reading /listening to books, cooking, and going to theme parks.

My Story

I knew that I wanted to pursue a deeper understanding of science by the time I was in high school. All the science courses were my favorite, and I decided to continue my studies in college although I was unsure of what I wanted to do afterwards. Like many students who love biology and anatomy, I considered medical professions. I quickly discovered that while I enjoy dissections, I do not have the stomach for blood or bodily fluids or medical procedures. Teachers throughout my education have been a continual source of support and encouragement. While in college at Indiana University, I was mentored by professors who encouraged me to continue to graduate school. After earning my bachelor’s degree in Biology, I attended Emory University and earned my doctorate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences with an emphasis on Population Biology, Ecology, and Evolution of Infectious Disease. At that point, I was interested in pursuing a career teaching at the college level. God’s plans are greater than ours and rather than pursing a career, as my family grew, we were redirected to a new path. For the next 10 years, I stayed home and homeschooled my children. Eventually, God opened the door for me to return to education in a more formal setting, and I began teaching at NFC Academy.
