WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE LAST YEAR OF MIDDLE SCHOOL?

The majority of 8th graders are about thirteen (13) years old which means they are brand-new teenagers whose bodies and minds are developing and changing along as they work through the middle school years.  This time period can be challenging for the student as well as the parent so it’s important to have an idea of what to expect, how to navigate it and make the most of these years before they start high school.

The best online school 8th grade will be a continuation of curriculum from the previous years but it will also allow for an advanced path that students can elect to take. Typically, 8th grade is the final year before grades become a part of the high school transcript and classes start counting as credits towards graduation.  However, some students can choose to move ahead and enroll in 9th grade courses in subjects where the school provides the option as they begin their 8th grade year. Parents and teens should carefully discuss and review the options to be sure the student is ready for this step both mentally and physically since it will require more work at a higher level and will be shown on the student’s transcript from high school.

Homeschooling provides the flexibility that teenagers need as they go through this transition since schedules can be modified and study habits may sometimes change from what they were previously.  Many teens prefer to stay up late and sleep later, but a traditional school schedule is limited as students may be off to school well before 8:00 am. An online program offers the students many options and one is they can schedule their own daily study schedule.  Parents who utilize a formal online platform can keep up with grades and progress as an accountability by accessing their online portal and making sure students are not falling behind or check if extra help is needed. Online teachers should be directly connected with the student in every subject, identifying strengths and weaknesses so they can gain confidence throughout the year.  Abstract conceptualization and writing skills should be more developed during this year and students should start to think about their interests and towards the future. The online guidance counselor connected with the school should work with the student, as they enter 9th grade, to develop a path to graduation with courses and electives mapped out for the remaining four years. Some homeschool programs may even start providing elective options as early as 7th or 8th grade, helping students to prepare for the course load they can expect in high school and then college. Parents should be supportive as the student starts to take more ownership of their education and encourage them to develop good study habits and time management skills.

Navigating the early teenage years can be exciting and scary at the same time but homeschooling provides an opportunity for parents and their teen to form a solid relationship as they work closely together in all aspects. Take advantage of the quality online school for 8th grade and create a schedule that brings everyone together while giving them the space they need to grow into their developing personality.
